Higher Education’s Crash is Like the Death of Hollywood’s Studio System

Used to be the most Hollywood’s stars could aspire to was a “tenure” slot at one of the major studios.

Then things changed. A lot.

The parallel sounds about right to me.

  1. NotClauswitz says:

Universities traditionally keep score with their collection of living Nobel Prize winners – but as Teh Feudal Academe grew, the Deans (Lords) became stars who played up the growth and importance of their fiefs to attract more such winners and Federal Grant money – it’s all about taxation with them.
IMO these “star” professors have always existed – perhaps not to such a degree or ability to leverage their position – a “Google Fellow” (or any “Fellow”) is just a guy with a whole lot of money from *someone* (calling Bill Gates! – or George Soros!) backing his Chair at a bully pulpit/school – and as Hollywood is notorious for its actors’ immense vanity and self-regard, don’t kid yourself that these star-professors don’t or won’t succumb to that also – if they haven’t already.
Meanwhile, Paul Krugmann was breathlessly waiting for a shot at commentary.
