First World Problems

I’ve not been hiding. I’m on a mission.

A couple weeks back I asked my guitar instructor about maybe starting some ear training. After a short conversation we concluded that attempting to do this with a bass guitar would be one of the more difficult methods, what with the octaves being so low.

He said I could either do this with a piano/keyboard, or with the guitar. Seeing as how I’m already learning to play the bass guitar, I decided that sliding over to a standard six-string would be the easier choice.

So yay, I get to buy another guitar! Boo-hiss, good guitars aren’t cheap.

I wanted one of these

But hoo-boy, that’s some paper. Even used.

So I decided that one of these would be easier on the wallet

Not by much though. And my preferred color configuration is no longer made and can be quite hard to come by used in decent shape.

So I’m settling on a beginners model Les Paul

Now, to find just the right one. Hopefully. Wish me luck.

Oh, and if anyone has one of these sitting around they’d like to send my way, I’ll gladly accept it and thank you profusely.

I bet that costs as much as a good AR…

If you’ve got a Gretsch thing going, look for a used DeArmond M75/M75T/M77/M77T (T == w/Bigsby). They’re solid-bodies, essentially a Duo-Jet copy, not a semi-hollow like you’re lusting after, but they really do sound like a Gretsch, they’re a joy to play. I paid $375 used for one a few years ago in Cambridge, MA. Can’t touch it for that money. BTW I paid $125 a year earlier for a cheaper DeArmond M65, the entry-level LP copy, and it’s the best entry-level guitar I’ve ever played. If I had to sell every guitar but one, I’d probably keep that M65, I kid you not. If I had to sell every guitar but two, I’d keep the two DeArmonds.

Fender bought them and promptly pulled the plug, go figure.

And the M75 came in Champaign Sparkle. Which, OK, not everybody’s first choice. Or virtually anybody’s. But throw in a pair of pink pegged slacks, and what the hell more could you possibly need?

AFAIK DeArmonds are still “undiscovered”. Undervalued by 50% at least IMHO. YMMV, but I doubt it.

    Thank you for the tip.

I was talking to a indie guitar shop owner this morning who used to work at Tacoma Guitars. Fender bought them, came in to inspect what they bought, said everything was cool and went away for a year or so. Only the name on the paychecks changed.

After that first year or so, Fender sent the shut down squad and he was out of a job within a week.

    Good Democrat donating job outsourcers/killers.

Yet another reason for me to make my last P-Bass my LAST Fender and go hunting for a nice Thunderbird (and a Firebird if I get a spare grand or so).

Yes, they do, NC. But I already have AR’s. And SKS’s, and HK’s and ammo for all of them. You’re going to need something to do in the long dark hours on watch during the Zombocalypse.
