I have seen this we’re better than you are, because “criminals must be controlled” attitude in person in my town as well. I live in a Northern suburb of Seattle, One of the small cities in South Snohomish Co.
I have been given no reason to believe this attitude is not endemic to most, if not all, police. I think it’s at least exacerbated by the militarization of police forces including the SWAT / Storm Trooper mentality and wearing of black “tactical” uniforms with face masks and carrying of full auto carbines.
I have begun to fear and feel real suspicion of the police here, and don’t know what exactly to do about it. I used to welcome the presence of police in my neighborhood, but now, not so much.
I’m friendly with several members of the City Council and have voiced concerns that the police force has gotten the idea that they are more of an occupying force than public servants. Some of the ideas the council members have voiced in private conversations are stopping the use of mil-spec uniforming, wearing of armor, the use of full auto carbines and face masks. I’ve suggested changing the uniforms from the black and camouflage tactical style with helmets to a more traditional look without militaristic affectations. Perhaps so far as reverting to double action revolvers and less “tactical” gear on the service belt. We need police who look like policemen, not Storm Troops. They also should be easily and instantly identifiable. NO SKI MASKS, and badge numbers large enough to see.
I should not feel intimidated by the presence of a cop.
Gerry N.
I am an ex-police officer. 7 yrs + a medical discharge= back back, and bad knees.
I’ve seen that same attitude in many of my brothers.
The attitude of doing “anything” to come home safe seems to be overriding the concept of “public servant” and “to Protect and SERVE“. The current attitude of intimidation is a disappointment to the optimist in me.
During my shortened career, I suggested that the Tactical units NOT wear camo or black or even dk gray fatigues: “leave those to the Soldiers… we’re Cops”.
I suggested medium blue /light brown fatigues for cops and sheriffs’ deputies. You’d a thought I’d suggest screwing a nun…. “We’ve GOT to have the ultimate tactical advantage! What you are suggesting isn’t safe for the Tactical Team!” …and so on.
Ummm, not most cops that I have talked with in my 30+ years. But it does seem many on this site like the owner, are basically anti cop at heart, me thinks mostly out of jealousy of some sort. The chance to rag cops is never passed up. Always without asking those available their opinions about why or when.
“Pat†is in CA, what do you expect it’s a lost state that will not be free in our life time, they hire based on politics and politics is what they get. Until the government is changed, read freed, it will only get worse. A lot of cops flee CA and come to Oregon and WA for a more free life and are constantly telling others that they are dis heartened by the political changes they see in formally free states…
“Anti-cop at heart”? Not on your life, Craig.
What you fail to recognize is that I, like most folks around here, am anti-abuse of authority. Read the top two post I put up today and tell me that the governments in question wouldn’t be able to find multiple members of the law enforcement community to enforce those unjust laws.
A couple weeks back, I asked RNS readers currently of formerly serving in the military, which orders they would disobey and/or cause them to quit. Those answers were honorable.
Any “cop” who would enforce the laws in the top two posts, I would be anti that particular cop. But at heart, the men and women who are just keeping the peace, protecting and serving and not living an “Us vs. Them” mind game I fully support.
If that isn’t clear enough, maybe you can think of it like this: I support teachers, so long as they are successful in teaching students. The ones who can’t teach need to get a new career.
I take high umbrage with CRAIG’S statement.
I am NOT ‘anti-cop’! I have never said that.
What I DO have a problem with is the souring of the public service attitude & the increase of the “Militant Occupation Force” attitude. Very few of the LEOs that I know, have the wrong attitude. Many of my friends, as I did, prefer to be referred to as ‘Peace Officers’.
But I will admit to despairing the increasing attitude of “US vs. THEM” in every part of American Policing.
ANTI-COP: no. Because before I get to that point, society will have pushed the “Reset Button”.
“high umbrage” Gotta love that….me thinks you doth protesth too much. Hows that? Alright the “anti cop” label maybe a little strong, BUT the bad cop mantra does seem to take up alot of time here….and once started never seems to end. Every body has to breathlessly tell their story about talking with a cop that don’t see it the “correct” way. Just an observation MTCW’s. By the way ask those cops about what they think of citizens that keep asking them that type of question and you will get an ear full.
By the way in my opinion the “re-set” button has already been pushed its just winding up which take a little time.
And by the way the “the souring of the public service attitude & the increase of the “Militant Occupation Force†attitude.” is a protective reaction by the way they are treated by the public a great deal but more by the way they are treated by their depts and gov’s who use them as expendable TP. Ya that would tend to sour you after a while, do you best to help and keep getting bitten in the face has a tendency to make you pull back a little bit…Hate cops that “don’t” do their jobs? How bout cops who hate citizens who don’t do their part under the socal contract we call the constitution and bitch, bitch bitch while waiting for somebody else to FIX it for them? Citizen and cops in this country are supposed to be a 50 -50 prop. Now days it more like 90 vs 20 and you get bitched and punished for not carrying the spoiled brats coffee…and by the way I put in my TC’s on the military question as well. Rancor off.
