Christmas Thanks

Rob of the SayAnything blog is thankful he is not Canadian

One thing I’ve been thinking about as lay convalescing in the hospital is just how rapidly I was able to get what was ailing me treated.

Saturday night I had severe abdominal pains. An ER doctor made a preliminary diagnosis of gall bladder problems that night, something that was confirmed by a surgeon that next morning. By Sunday at noon I was already on the schedule to get my gall bladder removed the following day.

If I were Canadian, my wait to get my very painful gall bladder problem fixed would have been approximately 5 weeks according to them America Medical Student Association. It’s about nine months in the United Kingdom, and three years in Sweden.

Yeah, I’m not such a big fan of “free” or my government that I’m willing to suffer like that for more than say, a day. Which is why I live in America and hold down a job that gives me bennies like “Health Insurance”. Folks who are unwilling to do that should not make me pay for their laziness.

You get what you pay/work for.

I had pancreaotitis earlier this year, which had me in the hospital for 8 days. Blocked bile ducts from gall stones can cause this (among other things). The pain is just unbelievable. It literally felt like Eddie Scissorhands was massaging my guts most of the time. If I had to wait 5 weeks, I am sure I would have eaten the .45 for relief.

I’ve never heard any of the free-healthcare bunch respond to stories of “free” Canadian/British/
French/whatever healthcare putting people on waiting lists. They ignore any reports of when it happens, probably because it doesn’t fit into their ideaology. They’re rather healthcare be “free” and ineffective, than have to pay for prompt service.
