The ICE, that is.Â
Imagine my surprise when I opened my email from the Seattle Times this morning and read this story
Big surge in state residents seeking citizenship
Jackie Johnson came to the United States from Jamaica 24 years ago, green card already in hand.
Five years later, she was eligible for citizenship.
But the 40-something computer specialist, who works in downtown Seattle, never pursued it. It didn’t seem that important, she said.
Now, all this talk about immigration has made her reconsider. She has downloaded the citizenship application form and plans to fill it out.
…
Uncertainty over how Congress plans to reshape the nation’s immigration system is driving increasing numbers of legal permanent residents in Washington state, so-called green-card holders, to seek citizenship. They are among a record number of green-card holders doing so nationwide.
Good! Damn good.
I don’t care if they fear Jehovah, Muhammed or Ra, non-citizens need to fear the immigration agencies more. Lollygagging around with an application for citizenship for 19 years is a waste of our time.
The woman comes here in 1982, becomes eligible for citizenship in 1987, but “it didn’t seem that important”? Excuse me? The only reason it didn’t seem important was 1. She’s an idiot, and 2. She was already here.
I bet that a goodly number of the folks who were still in Jamaica these last 24 years wished they had the opportunity for US citizenship. But she just puts it in her purse like so much Kleenex.
Now that I think about it, if she waited so long, why doesn’t she just hand it off to someone who thinks of it as important?
Lets get the folks who want to be here signed up and have the rest hit the road.
